Place the laptop face down, and remove all Phillips-head screws from the laptop’s bottom. Do the same to the hard drive situated next to the battery compartment. Grasp the battery pack’s pull-tab, and pull the battery from its compartment. Pull open the battery and hard drive compartment covers along the right side edge of the laptop’s casing. Attach an antistatic wrist strap to your wrist. Disconnect any external devices from the computer, and close the LCD panel. Shut down the laptop, and unplug the main power cable. This is done by removing and replacing the CMOS, a small, watch-like battery attached directly to the motherboard. Fortunately, in the event that you lose or forget this passcode, you can reset it manually. In many laptop computers, including ToughBook CF-18 laptops, the BIOS is protected by a passcode, or serial number. You can access the BIOS operating system only while your computer is booting up. The BIOS stores a very basic operating system that allows your computer’s hardware to communicate with the main operating system. Every motherboard has a small, built-in black memory chip called a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS).
